Spark24: our first carbon neutral event

MiQ

We want to make programmatic better - for the industry, and the planet. So from the ads we serve to the events we host, our sustainability journey shapes what we do - and how we do it.

Impacting innovation - not the planet

As a global business, we host global events. Spark24 is our biggest event that’s held at our Centre of Excellence in India. We bring the brightest minds together for insightful discussions and a 24-hackathon, but this inevitably leaves a carbon footprint. So in 2024, we set out to make Spark24 bigger, better, and greener.

Although we had 250 participants, this year’s Spark24 was completely carbon neutral. Working closely with our sustainability partner 51toCarbonZero, we offset the emissions caused by flights and hotels. Read on to discover how we did it.

Carbon offsetting Spark24

To offset the carbon emissions of Spark24, we worked with Klimate. They helped us get involved in local projects that reduced the environmental impact of our event, and gave back to regional communities.

One of these projects was Carboneers, which works in the Odisha and Assam regions of India to help farmers store biomass in a stable way. Carbon byproducts are captured in a substance called biochar and put back into the soil, improving its quality and locking the carbon away for thousands of years.

Not only does this project help offset carbon emissions, it also creates jobs for the local community - with a particular focus on creating opportunities for women.

We also supported Varaha - a reforestation initiative based in Nepal. By reintroducing native species into the ecosystem and investing in the surrounding rural communities, it aims to improve the biodiversity of the region and sequester one billion tonnes of carbon by 2030.
